The Nutcracker The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia with choreography by Lev Ivanov and music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The story was taken from an E.T.A. Hoffmann tale, "The Nutcracker and The Mouse King". This first production was created for and danced by the children of the Imperial Ballet School of Russia.

Years of extensive research in the United States, England, and Russia have led to the Loudoun Ballet Company's reconstruction of the original version of The Nutcracker. Love of dance and enormous respect for ballet tradition motivated founder Sheila Hoffmann-Robertson to undertake and continue this lengthy restoration project. The Loudoun Ballet Company's full-length version of The Nutcracker premiered in Leesburg, Virginia, on Dec. 8, 1990.
